Santa Rosa de Ocopa Convent
It is located in Concepción town, 25 kilometers far away from Huancayo.
This convent is considered a historical monument, because of its architecture
and art.
It was strategical founded in 1725 by the Franciscan Priest Francico Jiménez de San José,
to make easier the task to preach people from the jungle.
Next to the convent there is chapel that is a historical monument too,
because of its Renaissance style, and its baroque altarpieces. There are some
catacombs under the high altar, where some missionaries rest.
At the entrance there is a statue of Virgin Mary that was made in white marble
in 1954.
Inside we can find a museum of natural history, where there are biological
samples of animals and plants that were brought by Jesuits and Franciscans
from different places in Peru's jungle.
Convents' library
Also you can visit the library which has more than 25 000 books, the oldest
book is from 1490, historical maps (XVI; XVII; XVIII centuries), books
writen in Latin and in antique Spanish, and many original books of
Peru's history and literature.
This convent has 5 cloisters:
1. Los Olivos (The olive grove): In this place you will find just one
olive tree, but it is not as any other one, because it is 270 years old,
and it was planted by the priest Francisco Jiménez de San Jose.
2. Portería (Principal door of the convent): On the walls of the door
there are beautful pictures of "Escuela Huamanguina" those pictures represent
the way of the cross.
3. Obrería (Patio): This patio has in the middle a statue of the
Franciscan Priest Francisco Jiménez de San José, who is the founder of
the convent.

4. Padre Pío (Pio the priest): Here there is the tomb of the
Franciscan Priest Pio Sarobe, who is well known because of his sanctity.
Actually his life is being studied by Catholic church to beatify him.
5. Coristado.
Ocopa's convent is an ideal place to rest and meditate, it is surronded
by trees and swings for adults and children.
